 「彌賽亞」（Messiah）這齣神劇（Oratorio）於1742年4月13日，在愛爾蘭首都Dublin的音樂廳作第一次的演出，首場演出就造成轟動，贏得聽眾們的廣大喝采。

韓德爾（George Frederick Handel）在1685年出生於德國。原本父母將他送去唸法律，期望他成為律師，還好他放棄法律的生涯，後來成為偉大的音樂家。他一開始是個有名的歌劇作曲家（opera），他的歌劇在歐洲不少國家巡迴表演。1711年韓德爾移民到英國，1726年入籍英國。1737年由於面臨龐大的經濟窘困，曾一度中風，之後他的創作生涯從歌劇轉變為神劇（oratorio），他的神劇也成為萬古流芳的巨作，尤其是「彌賽亞」（Messiah）。

「神劇」（Oratorio）原意是"oratory by music"，它屬於宗教歌曲，用音樂來啟發聖經的意義跟故事。韓德爾最拿手的地方，就是利用音樂將聖經的話語發揚光大，令人聽了不禁讚嘆聖樂的崇高意境。藉由音樂的聖經故事來教化人心也是韓德爾創作的主要的動機。

「彌賽亞」（Messiah）是源自希伯來文（Hebrew），也就是聖經中新約所謂的「基督」（Christ）。這齣神劇的故事以聖經記載中，耶穌基督的生平故事當作背景綱要，裡面的歌詞也是根據聖經典故。

這首著名的Halleluhiah大合唱，在英國有個不成文的慣例，就是音樂會裡聽到這一首時，大家都會起立肅敬。很多人都不知道起立的用意，其實是因為它的大意主要根據下面的經文。  

Rev. 19:6 「Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty thunderpeals, crying, "Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.」 

啟示錄 19:6 「我聽見好像群眾的聲音，眾水的聲音，大雷的聲音，說：哈利路亞！因為主─我們的神、全能者作王了。」 
 

Rev 11:15 「Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever."」

哥林多前書 15:24 「再後，末期到了，那時基督既然一切執政的、掌權的、有能的、都毀滅了，就把國交與父神。」

因此這個大合唱，主要是讚美歌誦耶穌，他的降臨以及苦難終成為人類救世主的訊息。這個習慣初次是因為喬治國王一世（King George 1）聽得感動不已，突然肅然起立，既然國王都起立了，以下的臣民們全都跟著起立，也成為後來聽這首的不成文慣例。

看過電影「耶穌受難記」的朋友，看到耶穌受難被釘在十字架的那一刻，那就是歌詞裡所表達的 "take up his great power and reign" as "King of kings and Lord of lords"。歌誦著耶穌爲人類犧牲的精神將永垂不朽。

後記： 第一次接觸韓德爾的「彌賽亞」（Messiah）是在唸初中時，欣賞高中生的男女混聲大合唱（合唱團員約50人，由鋼琴伴奏）的表演，當時覺得還不錯，有點小小震撼。後來在美國唸大學時，我加入學校的合唱團，也有表演那一首。合唱團裡有一百三十多個成員（男女比例各半），加上學校裡的交饗樂團編制，哇~~~ 整個舞台跟聽眾幾乎一樣多，簡直塞爆了。整齣神劇表演將近兩個小時，彩排時，熱鬧搶搶滾不打緊，我穿著高跟鞋站在舞台的合唱台上，腳真是痠痛地欲哭無淚，幸好學姊傳授秘訣，只有上下台時，要穿高跟鞋，站好合唱台階上就「自動」脫鞋，所以很多女生整齣戲都是赤著腳唱的 @@”。記得有次合唱表演結束，有個女生下台之後居然兩隻鞋子不翼而飛，下台後她緊張地跑去找指導老師，說鞋子丟了，老師嘀咕納悶著：「這可邪門，穿在腳上的東西居然自動不見啦？」><
